If you love hot wings, this recipe for Sweet and Spicy Breaded Chicken Wings will blow you away.
It can be a little bit of work and messy to bread and fry the chicken but these are well worth it.
I ordered some chicken wings from a large pizza shop the other night and I was so disappointed in the small miserable little wings, I decided to make mine… So much better than any wing I’ve had from chains.
I like to buy wings from Sams Club. They are just bigger and better than regular grocery stores in my opinion.
We really love hot wings but normally they are not breaded from most of the chains. It makes a big difference.
You need the breading to hold all of the delicious sweet and hot sauce. You will be happy with these chicken wings.
Not in the mood for wings? our recipe for crispy chicken parmesan is also very good or you could try our zuppa toscana which is another favorite.
Enjoy!
Ingredients
1 Pack chicken wings
1 cup sugar
1 large bottle of hot sauce (I like crystals, personally)
2 cups flour
2 Tbsp onion powder
1 Tbsp salt
1 Tbsp paprika
1 Tbsp black pepper
1/2 stick of butter
3 eggs
4 cups canola oil for frying
Instructions
For the Sauce:
The sauce is pretty simple but so good. the ratio is 50/50 so 50% sugar to 50 % hot sauce. add those to a microwave-safe bowl and add the butter. Cover and microwave for 1:30. Stir it till the sugar is incorporated then let it sit while you do the wings.
For the wings:
Heat the oil over medium heat. I would say medium-high but you don't want it to be too hot...it should be wavy not smoking.
If you buy the large chicken wings as I do then you may need to cut them up. just use a serrated knife and cut them across the knuckle joint so that you have wingtips and small drums.
Wisk the eggs in a bowl till well mixed. put the flour in a separate container and season with the other dry ingredients.
if you rinsed your wings just put them dry. Now coat each wing piece in egg then into the flour mixture.
Make sure to coat the wings well. remember this is for texture but also to hold the sauce.
Shake off excess flour and place your wings into the hot oil. cook for 5-7 minutes per side, depends on how well you like your wings. You don't want them burned that's why we cook longer on a lower heat. Also, the directions say 30 minutes for cooking time. this is because I had to do two batches to get all of the wings done.
When the wings are done put them into a bowl and pour the sauce on top. mix the wings around so they get coated well.
